William Nathaniel Smith is social services program developer, administrator, and trainer with over 40 years of experience working youth and those in need in communities across the country. He has dedicated his life to the betterment of individuals and communities through the provision of educational and support services.
At Winston-Salem State University, he studied Elementary Education and following graduation taught school in the Montgomery County Maryland School system. He later enrolled at the University of Missouri –Columbia and graduated with a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. While studying at “Mizzou” Mr. Smith served as the Director of the “Black Culture House” where he assisted minority students with their acclimation to the university’s living and learning environment. His tenure as Director was such that he was invited back to the university to serve as a guest speaker for the inaugural Big Eight Black Student Government convention.
Subsequent to completing his education in Missouri, Mr. Smith returned to the Washington DC area where he embarked an upwardly mobile 30 year career working in local and national social services organizations such as United Planning Organization (UPO), RCA and General Electric (Job Corps), and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. Mr. Smith has assumed many positions in the field including Counselor, Manager, to Residential living Director, and Deputy Center Director. His outstanding performance in these positions resulted in his appointment to corporate positions with several government contractors including Vinnell Corporation, Northrop Gruman, Resource Consultants Inc (RCI). He retired as Director of Operations for Del-Jen Inc.
Mr. Smith presently serves as the President of Friendship Charities Foundation Inc. and has found that “he can never help others in need without positively affecting himself”. He served on its board since 2010. He also serves as an active member of the Harlem Renaissance Festival Collaborative Board where he serves volunteer coordinator for the event that promotes cultural awareness and personal empowerment to over 18,000 community residents annually.
